OpenAI Gift Card Explained: Where to Buy, How to Redeem, and What It Pays For

The OpenAI ChatGPT gift card is a non-reloadable, US-dollar stored-value card. You buy it from a participating authorized retailer, give it to someone (or keep it), and redeem it on ChatGPT web to add its full value to the OpenAI wallet balance of one ChatGPT account. From there, the balance is spent on eligible ChatGPT purchases.

OpenAI describes it as separate from three things people mix it up with: gifting credits (a claim-link purchase made inside ChatGPT), promotional codes and free-trial invitations, and API prepaid billing. Each has its own eligibility and refund rules, and a gift card balance cannot be used to fund the API.

Until this launch there was no official ChatGPT gift card of any kind, and 'ChatGPT gift cards' sold by third parties were subscription credits or store-brand vouchers. The official card changes that — for US buyers only.

OpenAI sells the card through participating authorized retailers, not on chatgpt.com. At launch the cards are digital and available at select retailers; OpenAI says availability, physical versus digital distribution, timing, and denominations vary by retailer, so check a retailer's own listing rather than assuming a fixed roster.

Unless a retailer specifies otherwise, denominations run from $15 to $250. The card is denominated in USD only; there are no local-currency versions and OpenAI's guidance is explicit that a US card should not be bought for someone who cannot meet the US location and USD-billing requirements.

Treat the PIN as confidential. Once a PIN is redeemed OpenAI cannot refund funds back to the card, so a card whose PIN has been exposed — including one bought from an unauthorized reseller — may already be empty.

Redemption is limited to the United States. You must be physically in the US and signed in to a ChatGPT account billed in US dollars; travelling abroad can block redemption until you return, and a redeemed USD balance does not pay for a purchase billed in another currency.

Eligible plans are ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro on personal accounts, plus ChatGPT Business workspaces — where only the workspace owner can redeem into the workspace balance. Some complimentary subscriptions are ineligible even when the plan name appears supported.

The full value of the card is redeemed at once — you cannot redeem part of it — and once it lands in an account it cannot be moved to another. Check which account you are signed in to before entering the PIN.

A redeemed balance can pay for directly billed subscription purchases, upgrades, and renewals, and for one-time credit purchases, on ChatGPT web. Redeeming does not itself start a subscription or change your plan; you still pick a plan at checkout, and the balance is applied automatically.

You cannot choose how much of the balance to use: OpenAI applies the available gift card balance first and bills any remainder to your other payment method. Trials and promotions may still require a card on file, and a renewal only goes through if the balance or another payment method covers the full charge.

Subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play are not eligible. To use the balance on a plan you currently pay for through Apple or Google, cancel it in that store, wait for it to end, then start an eligible web subscription on the same account. Note that as of September 10, 2026 OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the ChatGPT Pro $200 plan; a balance cannot buy that plan until the pause is lifted.

OpenAI now has two gifting products, and a marketplace subscription code is the third option most people outside the US actually use. They are not interchangeable.

If you are not in the United States, or the person you are gifting is not, the official card is not an option. The route that works is a ChatGPT subscription credit on Taria Gift: you pay with USDC or USDT — no bank card, no Stripe — receive the activation details on your order page, and the plan is activated on the recipient's own account.
